๐Ÿ“ Chicago Trail Series

A dog walker's honest guide to the trails we actually walk.

If you've ever tried to find out whether a Chicago trail is actually good for dogs โ€” not just "leashes required" but actually good โ€” you know how hard it is to find a straight answer. Most trail guides tell you the distance and the parking situation. They don't tell you whether your dog is going to spend the whole walk dodging cyclists, whether there's water anywhere, or whether you're going to run into a pack of off-leash dogs before you even get started.

This series is the guide I wish existed when I started walking dogs professionally in Chicago. Every trail on this list I've walked myself, with dogs, in different seasons and at different times of day. I'm telling you what's actually there โ€” the smells, the hazards, the vibe, and whether it's worth the trip with your specific dog.

These trails are all within or close to our service area in Roscoe Village, Lakeview, North Center, and surrounding neighborhoods. Your dog deserves a good walk. Here's where to take them.

312 RiverRun

North Center / Horner Park

A quiet 1.1-mile stretch along the North Branch of the Chicago River. Boardwalks, native plantings, and the kind of smells that make a dog's whole day. One of the most underrated walks on the North Side.

The 606

Bucktown / Wicker Park / Logan Square

An elevated rail trail with big city energy and a lot of foot traffic. Great views, interesting smells from the neighborhoods below, and plenty of other dogs โ€” but it gets busy. Timing matters here.

Lakefront Trail

Lakeview / Lincoln Park

18 miles of lake, wind, and every kind of person Chicago has to offer. The lakefront is stunning and dogs love the air โ€” but it's a shared multi-use path and it shows. Know what you're walking into before you bring a nervous dog.

Peggy Notebaert Nature Trail

Lincoln Park

A short, quiet loop tucked inside Lincoln Park that most people walk right past. Native plantings, a pond, and a butterfly garden make it one of the best sniff walks in the neighborhood. Small but mighty.

Belmont Harbor Path

Lakeview / North Halsted

A breezy harbor-side walk with sailboats, lake views, and a relaxed energy that's hard to find this close to the city. Good for a quick morning walk or winding down in the evening. Dogs tend to love the water smell.
